One of the biggest shifts we can have in our prayers is to pray SPECIFIC prayers. There’s at least three reasons for this.
1. Be intentional with your prayers and ask for specific prayers so that you are not praying for things out of habit or requesting for general things. There is nothing wrong to pray for a blessed day or even praying before a meal, but the goal is to be intentional in our prayers.
2. When you pray specific prayers, you will know when God answers the prayer. Again going back to generic prayer requests, the reality is when or if it is answered, it will be generally recognized. However, when you pray specific prayers and when God answers them, you will know the prayers have been answered.
3. When you recognize specific prayers are answered, then it will increase your faith in the power of prayer. How amazing is it to know that God listens AND answers our prayers.
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. – Matthew 7:7
At the end of the day, when we pray specific prayers the ultimate motive is not for God to answer what we are requesting, rather for God’s will to be done in our lives. We seek the giver – not the gift. We pray specific prayers to recognize God is moving in our lives and answering our prayers.
